For a copywriter, projects don’t get much more daunting than writing words that form part of the legacy of Seamus Heaney — Nobel Laureate, world-renowned poet and one of the greatest Irish writers of all time.

That was the challenge ahead of us when Mid Ulster District Council gave us the go-ahead to write website copy for Seamus Heaney HomePlace

While we can objectively observe that Heaney is a cultural giant and an iconic Irish personality who was beloved around the world, the poet did not see himself that way and so HomePlace’s website couldn’t either. A key challenge of this project was to demonstrate the undeniable cultural importance of HomePlace, while respecting Heaney’s unfaltering humility.

Visiting HomePlace is a warm, moving and inspirational experience, so we brought some of those feelings to the website copy in order to give readers a sense of what emotions will be stirred during their visit.

A taste of what we wrote

Be moved, be inspired

While much of Seamus Heaney’s writing is inspired by words and ways of life specific to this area, his human relationships and household objects, which we bring to the fore in our exhibition, are familiar to many. This creates a deeply personal visitor experience.

Time and again, our visitors  — including those who may not have been aware of Heaney’s work beforehand  — tell us that their journey through HomePlace stirred unexpectedly strong emotions. This is a special place. Come and feel it for yourself.
